Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company was formed in June 2006 and the company became operational in April 2005. PGJDC has the support and backing of the Government of Pakistan through Ministry of Production. The success of two years of consultative exercise which led to the formation of PGJDC would have been impossible without the personal attention and encouragement given throughout by the Ministry of Production, Government of Pakistan.

This consultative process of value chain analysis, gap identification and pilot project identification was led by private sector stakeholders representing all the four provinces and federally administered territories. The result was the first ever mine-to-market strategy based on first hand information.

Our struggle started from 1957 and in 1974 Lahore Sarafa Association, headed by Haji Manzoor Ahmad, was formally launched. After successfully passing through many stages, we started working at the district level on July 25, 1975, and then at the division level. Its name was changed to Lahore Division Sarafa & Jewellers Association on July 30, 1976, and a number of jewellers associations merged in it. At that time the jewellers were facing the threat of police harassment and this association solved their problems amicably.

After working at the platform of Lahore Division Sarafa & Jewellers Association and resolving issues confronting the jewellers’ community, during Yahya regime, it resolved the issue of 25% Excise Duty on jewellers and after one month jewellers’ strike it was converted into 10% Sales Tax.

During Bhutto government the new gram system was successfully introduced by the Lahore Division Sarafa & Jewellers Association, replacing the old tola, masha and rati. Lahore Division Sarafa & Jewellers Association also issued a pamphlet, removing the confusion and solving the old dispute originating between the customer and the shopkeeper at the time of sale of old jewellery and purchase of new one.

An intimate viewing of the exhibit was held on the 20th of March for the media and guests to preview this interactive work to much acclaim and popularity. Speaking to the media at the Mohatta Palace Museum were Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and Amean J on behalf of CAP, Asad Umar CEO Engro Corp, Tahir Jawed Vice President Engro Corp and on behalf of the Mohatta Palace Museum,

Nasreen Askari. The preview was attended by a cross section of diverse personalities and indeed generations including Sami Mohammed Khan the Quaid e Azam's personal security in charge, Public Affairs Officer U.S. Consulate Karachi Elizabeth Colton, UK Deputy Head of Mission Simon Williams, APWA President Laila Sarfaraz along with sister Zeenat Safdar Haroon who was in

the Pakistan Women's National Guard, TV personality Obaidullah Baig, Jimmy Engineer and photographer Tapu Javeri.

Installed by the Citizens Archive of Pakistan in an authentic and innovative

manner, this exhibition is a pioneering attempt for the Museum and will hopefully pave the way for more exciting collaborations in the future."

"The Birth of Pakistan" was also made possible by the voluntary contributions of a team of a hundred students, artists, curators, researchers and academicians.

The Indo-Scythians were descended from the Sakas (Scythians) who migrated from southern Siberia to Pakistan and Arachosia from the middle of the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century BCE. They displaced the Indo-Greeks and ruled a kingdom that stretched from Gandhara to Mathura. Scythian tribes spread into the present-day Pakistan region and the Iranian plateau. The power of the Saka rulers started to decline in the 2nd century CE after the Scythians were defeated by the south Indian Emperor Gautamiputra Satakarni of the Satavahana dynasty .[34][35] Later the Saka kingdom was completely destroyed by Chandragupta II of the Gupta Empire in the 4th century.[36]
